So what about your Favorite black and white movie if you watch them then?
| | Citizen Kane | | I have seen it.. It's director orson welles is regarded as genuise and you have to watch "Making of citizen kane" - a film by itself. In 1998, voted #1 film of all time by the American Film Institute. Was voted the 2nd Greatest film of all time by Entertainment weekly.Voted #6 in Total Film's 100 Greatest Movies Of All Time list (November 2005).Despite all the publicity, the film was a box office flop and was quickly consigned to the RKO vaults. At 1941's Academy Awards the film was booed every time one of its nine nominations was announced. It was only re-released for the public in the mid-1950s.There are films that are great to watch themselves but only a few extend beyond themselves to influence other film makers as well. It has influenced an entire generation of film makers who started making films in the 1960s till date. Its lead character - Charles Foster Kane - was based upon the real life media baron of those days - William Randolph Hearst. He tried in vain to stop the making of this film and went even to the extent of burning the reels of this film to prevent its release.... | |
| | War of the Worlds - in Belgium | | Did anyone see this...
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20061214/ap_on_re_eu/belgium_independence_hoaxApparently a news agency interrupted regular broadcasting to announce that Belgium was undergoing a little bit of a revolution, with one 1/2 the population declaring independence and the royal family fleeing the country. They didn't announce that it was a hoax until 30 minutes into the show. People starting getting all concerned. Ambassadors from other countries believed it. Now the government is a little pissed.Anyways, it reminded me of the war of the Worlds radio broadcast done by CBS in 1938.Read more about it here... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_War_of_the_Worlds_(radio)What are your thoughts on this new event and the old radio broadcast? TV people just pulling a harmless prank? Or should it be viewed the same as shouting fire in a crowded theater?I myself find it very funny, but a little irresponsible considering the fact that there actually is some tension between the two groups in Belgium and previous talks of one group getting autonomy/self-rule.
| | Slow, Dark and Dreary | | Perhaps that is how movies were made back in the era of the black and white movies. Slow, dark and dreary. Just like Orson Welles in Citizen Kane. As usual, the story will be told by someone. In this film circa 1950, it is dead man talking once more. It starts with the dead protagonist floating in a swimming pool and then the whole movie goes on a flash back mode. Struggling writer in Hollywood, with rent in arrears for three months and a car waiting to by hauled back by financiers. By a chance encounter, the writer Joe meets the famous and legendary actress of yesteryear and is kept as a toyboy. So, when he tries to leave, he is shot dead. I watched the film firstly because it was the Best Film of 1950 and secondly, it was made before my time and I just have to see whether old retro movies still has that 'ooomph' for us to watch it again. I know for sure, the new generation will never appreciate such a movie as this. I thought it was okay. It was to be Gloria Swanson's best movie. She has since passed on. | |
| | Coming Soon | | Coming Soon: The Mother Of All 9/11 Truth Hit Pieces
History Channel, Popular Mechanics, NBC & Hearst Publishing team up for smear job as conflicts of interest run rifeSteve Watson & Paul Joseph Watson
Prison Planet
Thursday, August 2, 2007An upcoming documentary entitled The 9/11 Conspiracies, to be aired on the History Channel, may represent the biggest hit piece to date on the 9/11 truth movement and is rife with bias, cronyism and conflicts of interest. The so-called documentary promises not to look at the flaws in the official story from a neutral perspective but to start out by suggesting that any deviation from the official line is "outrageous". The program also features so called independent "experts" who are actually in the employ of the program makers themselves who in turn rely on scores of multi-million dollar contracts with the government and the military-industrial complex. The program, scheduled for Sunday, August 12 at 8:00 PM and Monday, August 13 at 12:00 AM, will feature Alex Jones, the Loose Change crew and other 9/11 researchers such as Professor Steven Jones and Webster Tarpley. One may therefore be forgiven for thinking the piece...
| | The Long Hot Summer 1958 or 1985? | | I usually prefer the original version of films but with The Long Hot Summer,I like the remake better. The orignial was made in 1958 with Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward. They were either an item or married when they made it. They have great chemistry but I prefer Don Johnson and Judith Ivery.Maybe it is beacuse Joanne and Paul are playing their parts but Don and Judith are the characters.the 1958 version had some heavy weights in the supporting roles.Orson Welles played the father,Lee Remick and Anthony Franciosa as Joanne' brothe and sister in law.But I prefer Jason Robards as the father. And Cybil Shepard and William Russ. How about you. Have you seen both versions? Which one do you prefer? | |
| | Is Citizen Kane The Best Movie Ever Made? | | OK, if you haven't seen it, you must. But for those of you who have, what's your opinion? It's still my favorite movie of all. There was never anything like it before and there hasn't been since. And you've got to give it up for Orson Welles. He was only 28 years old when he played that role. | |

| | The Magnificent Ambersons (1942) | | A classic period piece and costume drama based on the 1918 novel by Booth Tarkington about a prominent, wealthy, 19th century Midwestern family grappling with changing times, progress and the coming of the modern industrial age at the turn of the century. Eugene Morgan (Cotten) courts Isabel Amberson (Costello) over many years, but her spoiled son George (Holt) ruins their chances, and the proud family disintegrates into squabbling. Agnes Moorehead plays the romantically-frustrated Aunt Fanny. Like the previous year's Citizen Kane, this second film masterpiece by Orson Welles was mutilated by RKO studio executives before its release (with a sentimental, tacked-on ending), though it still remains a director's film, with refinement of cinematic techniques including sound manipulation, long takes, a complete rotation in a single shot, quick-cuts, and artistic cinematography. Academy Award Nominations: 4, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress--Agnes Moorehead, Best Art Direction-Set Direction, and Best B/W Cinematography. | |
| | Movie Reviews: Guru ...... rate it | | GURU, the latest film from writer-director Mani Ratnam, begins with the usual disclaimer about not being based on any individual and any similarities are purely coincidental. In this case, it is more than just legalese: the film is acknowledged to be loosely inspired by the life
of Indian entrepreneur Dhirajlal Hirachand Ambani, better known as Dhirubhai Ambani, the founder of Reliance Industries Limited. His firm,
initially called Reliance Commercial Corporation and set up to import polyester yarn and export spices, grew into the largest petrochemical firm
in India and is reportedly the largest private sector company in the country as well. Additionally, the company held interests in textile
manufacturing, telecommunications and financial services. Ambani died in 2002 and a dispute among his surviving family has led to the company being split into several smaller entities.
Ambani was a colorful figure whose ethics were not always above board. His life was chronicled in the unauthorized biography,The Polyester Prince by Hamish McDonald. Instead of taking a purely biographical approach to the material, Mani Ratnam instead optedto fictionalize the story (I would guess partly...
